Mustang Referral Program
Do you know a student who would be a good match for SMSU? If so, please participate in our Alumni Referral Program. Alumni referrals are a great source of qualified applicants because of your unique understanding of the type of student who would thrive here at SMSU. We truly value and are very grateful for your referrals.
If you know someone who might be interested in SMSU, participating is as easy as completing our quick online form.
What else can you do to help spread the word about our program?
- Share your own experience with potential SMSU students.
- Direct them to our website.
- Encourage them to attend an information session or special event.
About the Program
What happens when the Office of Admission receives my referral?
We enter the student's name, address and high school graduation year into our database. The student will receive admission materials appropriate for his or her high school graduation year and an application fee waiver.
Does the student have to apply for admission to Southwest Minnesota State University?
We hope that the student will want to apply for admission to SMSU after learning about our programs and campus life; however, they do not have to apply for admission.
Who should I refer to SMSU?
You should refer high school students who are considering post-secondary education and for whom we may be a good "fit."
Does the student have to be interested in SMSU?
No. The student may not even be familiar with SMSU. By sending us the student's name, you are giving the Office of Admission the opportunity to introduce SMSU to the student.
Does the student have to be a senior in high school?
No. In fact, we know students are beginning the college search process earlier in their high school career. You can send in the names of students who are in the first year of high school all the way through the fall of the senior year of high school.
Will the student know who referred them?
No, your name will not be given to the student. We do however encourage you to follow up with the student and have a conversation about SMSU telling them that you recommend Southwest as a college of choice.
